Stella Cherry (Prunus avium ‘Stella’)
Stella is a foundational self-fertile cherry cultivar known for its reliable cropping, cold tolerance, and adaptability to cool, high-rainfall climates, making it very well suited to your slope. Stella produces medium-sized, dark-red cherries with a rich sweetness and soft, juicy flesh, ideal for fresh eating. Bred in British Columbia, Stella’s origin in a cool, maritime-influenced climate aligns closely with conditions in West Gippsland, including cool springs, high rainfall, and unpredictable temperature swings. The tree grows with moderate vigour and forms a tidy sub-canopy shape that integrates well with other stone fruits and smaller orchard layers. Stella prefers a well-drained soil profile but can be established successfully in clay soils when planted high and supported with biological soil building. The edible parts are the sweet cherry fruits, consumed fresh or preserved. Stella is fully self-fertile but also serves as an excellent pollinator for other cultivars such as Lapins and Sunburst. Propagation is most reliable through grafting onto Colt rootstock, which provides improved tolerance to clay and wet soils, as well as consistent yields and long-term health. Stella typically begins fruiting within three to four years of grafting. The best support species around Stella include White Clover, Chives, Lemon Balm, Calendula, Sweet Alyssum, and Sorrel, which bring a combination of pollinator attraction, soil improvement, and natural pest management that supports the cherry’s sensitivity to fungal and bacterial diseases.
