A small, rustic tree with a short trunk, found in the higher rocky foot hills of Mexico and Arizona at altitudes up to 2000 m. It is a slow grower in its natural habitat but very wind, cold and drought hardy. The oily seeds are eaten raw or roasted. They are ground to flour for breads and cakes or made into a nut butter.
