Divinity (Prunus armeniaca)

Divinity Apricot (Prunus armeniaca ‘Divinity’)

Divinity is one of the most reliable apricots for cool-temperate regions because of its late flowering, which allows it to avoid much of the frost risk that typically destroys apricot crops in cooler areas. This makes it the strongest apricot choice for your West Gippsland property, where cold pockets and late winter frosts are common. Divinity produces medium-sized, intensely sweet fruit with a rich aroma and soft, golden flesh that stores and dries well. The tree originates from Australian breeding lines selected specifically for improved performance in challenging climates. It prefers a well-drained soil profile but will adapt well to biologically improved clay if planted on a mound to prevent root saturation during winter. The fruit is excellent for fresh eating, jam-making, drying, and dessert preparations, and the edible part is the entire juicy flesh. As a sub-canopy tree, Divinity supports mid-level structure within your food forest and benefits from sunny, open positions with sheltered airflow. The tree is self-fertile but benefits from the presence of pollinators during bloom. Propagation is best achieved through grafting onto apricot or plum-compatible rootstocks, ensuring fruit quality, disease resistance, and adaptability to your soil. Fruiting generally begins three to five years after grafting. Divinity integrates well with support species such as White Clover, Comfrey, Garlic, Yarrow, Calendula, Creeping Thyme, and Sweet Alyssum, which help maintain fungal balance, attract beneficial insects, suppress weeds, and stabilise the soil.
