AREA 1 – Warm citrus pocket (0.05 ac)

Final Theme: Frost-sensitive citrus + one fig

Clay loam here is excellent: warm + drained = ideal.

Trees (4)

  • Meyer Lemon
  • Satsuma Mandarin
  • Imperial Mandarin
  • Fig (Brown Turkey)

Soil-specific adjustments

  • Small mound (15–20 cm) under each citrus to prevent collar rot.
  • Fig is fine on-grade; it loves clay loam.

Recommended spacing

3.5–4 m between trees.

Updated guild for clay loam

  • White Clover (nitrogen + soil aggregation)
  • Comfrey (deep miner; strong fit for clay loam)
  • Creeping Thyme, Lemon Thyme (fungal partner, moisture moderation)
  • Yarrow, Calendula, Marigold (insectary + disease resilience)
  • Sorrel, Plantain (clay-breakers)
  • Sweet Alyssum (beneficials, moisture stabiliser)
  • Strawberries (groundcover)

Performance expectation: High — citrus will do very well here once the soil fungi rebound.
